UNDERSTANDING FLOWER ESSENCES
What are flower essences, and how do I work with them?
Flower essences are diluted, water-based preparations traditionally chosen around emotional themes and personal wellbeing. They are different from essential oils, which contain aromatic plant compounds, and from herbal extracts used for their medicinal ingredients. Flower essence work centres on how you are feeling and what is happening in your life.
For me, the essences belong within a thoughtful, personal conversation. They offer a way to bring nature into that exploration while giving attention to the qualities you would like to nurture in yourself.
From flower to essence
One well-known tradition is the system of 38 remedies developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1920s and 1930s. Other flower essence traditions have since developed in different parts of the world.
In the Bach method, flowers are placed in water in sunlight, or selected flowering plant material is boiled in water. The liquid is filtered, preserved and diluted to make stock essences. A personal blend is then prepared from selected stock essences. Many preparations contain alcohol as a preservative.
Choosing around your experience
In flower essence traditions, each essence is associated with particular emotional qualities, such as courage, openness or steadiness. Practitioners often describe this in terms of the flower’s energetic or vibrational qualities. This is the philosophy of the practice, rather than an established scientific explanation.
My approach brings together listening, reflection and Kinesiology to explore which themes feel relevant to you. We consider the qualities associated with an essence in relation to your own words and experience. You stay involved in choosing the focus; there is no need to know the names of the flowers beforehand.
What happens in a flower essence consultation?
We begin with what is on your mind. You might be finding your way through a change, wishing for clearer boundaries or noticing a familiar response that you would like to understand. There is time to put your experience into words.
Together, we choose a focus and discuss the essences that relate to it. I explain the reasons for the selection, and you are welcome to ask questions or say when something does not feel right for you.
Before we finish, we bring the chosen essences together into your personal blend and go through how to use and store it. My aim is for you to leave feeling heard and clear about the next step.
Your personal essence blend
A blend may contain one essence or a combination of up to seven. One bottle of your personalised blend is included in every initial and follow-up consultation.
Apple cider vinegar is available on request as the preservative added to your personal mixture. Small traces of alcohol may remain from the mother tincture and stock essences. Please let me know if you need to avoid alcohol or have concerns about ingredients, so we can check the preparation together. If this relates to a medicine or health condition, ask your pharmacist or healthcare professional about suitability.
After an online consultation, I can send your bottle within Europe for an additional postage cost, agreed beforehand. I do not send bottles outside Europe; for clients elsewhere, I usually recommend considering an online Emotions & Metaphysical Kinesiology session or Eurythmy Therapy instead.
Flower essences are part of my complementary wellbeing practice. Reliable clinical evidence has not established benefits beyond placebo for Bach flower remedies. They are not a treatment for medical or mental health conditions and do not replace appropriate healthcare.
Returning for a follow-up
I usually recommend three consultations, around three to four weeks apart, with the spacing agreed together. At each follow-up, we hear how you have been, revisit your chosen theme and decide whether to keep or adjust the blend.
Between consultations, you may like to make a few notes about everyday situations, feelings or responses connected with your theme. There is no right experience to report and no need to look for a particular change. We work with what you have actually noticed.
