UNDERSTANDING Eurythmy THERAPY

What is Eurythmy Therapy, and how do I work with it?

Eurythmy Therapy, known in Swedish as läkeeurytmi, is an individual movement therapy that grows out of the art of Eurythmy. Developed in 1921 by Rudolf Steiner in collaboration with doctors and eurythmists, it belongs to the anthroposophic approach to health, which considers body, soul and spirit together.

For me, this means meeting you as a whole person: how you move, how you feel and what life is asking of you at the moment. The artistic gestures of Eurythmy become carefully chosen exercises, shaped around your needs. You do not need previous experience or a particular level of fitness to begin.

Speech and music become movement

The sounds of speech and the elements of music have corresponding gestures in Eurythmy. A vowel, a consonant or a musical interval can become a movement of the hands, arms or whole body. Rhythm, direction and pauses give the exercise its particular character.

We may explore opening and gathering, flowing and forming, or moving and coming to rest. As you repeat a gesture with attention, you can notice its quality and how you experience it. This is a personal exploration, with no performance to achieve.

An active part in your wellbeing

Within anthroposophic medicine, these exercises are intended to support the person’s own capacities for balance and recovery. This is the therapeutic philosophy behind the work. In practice, we bring attention to movement, coordination, rhythm and your sense of being present in your body.

You take an active part through your own movement and awareness. My role is to guide, observe and help you find an exercise you can relate to. Your experience matters alongside what I notice, and together we explore what feels supportive for you.

What happens in a session?

We begin with a conversation about what brings you here, your health and what you hope to work towards. I then demonstrate a small selection of exercises and guide you through them step by step.

We find a suitable pace and range of movement together. Depending on your needs, an exercise may be practised standing, sitting or lying down, using the whole body or a smaller gesture. There is room to ask questions, pause and tell me how it feels.

Movement is followed by time to rest and notice your experience. Before we finish, we reflect on what stood out and agree how to continue. I usually recommend a sequence of three to five sessions, with the spacing agreed together. The exercises can develop as we learn what suits you.

A practice to take into everyday life

Practising between appointments can be a valuable part of the process. If you would like to do this, we choose a small amount that fits your daily rhythm and go through it together so you feel clear about how to begin.

At a follow-up, we look at how the practice has been for you, answer any questions and refine the movements. We can adjust the amount or the exercises as your needs change.

My experience as an Eurythmy teacher and therapist helps me make the exercises understandable and approachable. I would like you to leave with something you can make your own, with support as you find your way.

Working alongside your care

If you are seeking support for a health condition, we discuss your existing care and any advice or movement limitations from your healthcare team. Eurythmy Therapy is a complementary approach and does not replace necessary medical assessment or treatment. Research into its benefits is still developing, and evidence for treating specific conditions remains limited.
